A Local's Guide

The Closest Skiing to New York City

five minutes from the front door

Skiing near New York City is easier than most New Yorkers believe. Thunder Ridge Ski Area sits in Patterson, New York, about an hour north of Manhattan, and it is widely considered the closest ski area to the city. No dawn alarm, no Vermont traffic, no hotel. You can leave the city after breakfast and be on a chairlift before lunch.

Getting Here Without a Car

Thunder Ridge is one of the only ski areas in the country you can reach by commuter rail. Take the Metro North Harlem Line to Patterson station, and on winter weekends a shuttle connects the train directly to the mountain. It is a genuine ski train, an hour and change from Grand Central to first chair.

Why Families Love Thunder Ridge

This is the mountain where the region learns to ski. The slopes are gentle and confidence building, the ski school is excellent with kids, rentals are on site, and night skiing under the lights turns a school day afternoon into a ski day. Season passes cost a fraction of the big resorts, which is why so many local families make it their winter ritual.

Make It a Ski Weekend, or a Ski Season

The Little Red Farmhouse, our restored 1705 farmhouse, sits five minutes from the lifts. Ski all morning, then come back to a fire already laid, a Breville espresso, and three quiet acres of snow. We host nightly stays with a three night minimum and full winter season rentals from November through April.

After the Slopes

Dinner and a live show at Daryl's House Club, bakery runs at McKinney and Doyle, and the rest of our favorites are in our full guide to things to do in Pawling.
