A Local's Guide

Things to Do in Pawling, New York

one hour from the city

We have hosted guests at our farmhouse outside Pawling year round for more than a decade, and this is the list we send them. The village has real restaurants, the Appalachian Trail passes through the neighborhood, and the closest ski area to New York City is up the road. Everything below is within about forty minutes of the village.

Why We Love It Here

Pawling sits in the Harlem Valley on the eastern edge of the Hudson Valley, an hour from Grand Central by car or Metro North, and it does something few weekend towns manage: it stays a real town. The village green hosts farmers markets in summer, the bakery line on Saturday mornings is full of neighbors, and the hills around it hold working farms, protected forest, and some of the best day hiking in New York.

Winter is our favorite secret. While everyone else sits in traffic to Vermont, Thunder Ridge Ski Area runs its lifts five minutes from our door, with night skiing under the lights and a ski school that has taught half the county's kids. A snowy weekend here means first chair by nine and a fire lit by three.

Summer belongs to the trails. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Harlem Valley right here, over the famous Great Swamp boardwalk and up to the ledges at Cat Rocks, and thru-hikers step off the Metro North platform straight onto the trail. Add farm stands, alpaca walks, a maple syrup estate, and Hudson Valley wine within a short drive, and every season earns its keep. This guide is everything we tell our own guests, in the order we would do it.
